But we\u2019ve also gotten a lot better about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/how-to-clean-and-refresh-your-baselayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking care of our baselayers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll admit that we generally don\u2019t separate our laundry by color, and we certainly down own anything you\u2019d describe as \u201cdelicates.\u201d But we have started doing separate loads for our baselayers, since they tend to retain that special stink. The synthetics are especially bad, but even the wool garments make themselves &#8220;known.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We do a load with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/en-us\/products\/productdetail.php?productid=473&amp;itemid=-1&amp;fabricid=-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikwax BaseWash<\/a> about once a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(<em>If you\u2019re not going through synthetics at the alarming rate we do, you could definitely scale this back to once every couple of weeks.<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We include all our next-to-skin synthetics we\u2019ve worn over the course of the week, and for good measure, I typically throw in a couple of cotton t-shirts that I wear exclusively around the house because the pit stains are too hideous to be seen in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s key here is that the BaseWash is a detergent <em>replacement<\/em>, and that is why synthetics get their own, separate load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we don\u2019t have enough for a full, separate load of synthetics, we\u2019ll also occasionally do a load with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/en-us\/products\/productdetail.php?productid=722&amp;itemid=-1&amp;fabricid=-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikwax BaseFresh<\/a>, which works as <em>an additive to your regular detergent<\/em>. This stuff conditions synthetics and renews their ability to wick moisture, which is great for exceptionally sweaty people like my husband (<em>see earlier comment re: wet goat<\/em>).
