The trick is to clean your jacket first. Most times, it\u2019s dirt and crud that are covering the water-repellent coating, making your jacket soak up water. <em>Also important to note, using household detergents to clean can leave behind residues that attract water, so it&#8217;s important to use a technical cleaner for items with water-repellent coatings.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how to clean:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/en-us\/products\/Cleaning\/tech-wash\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/181-Tech-Wash-300-mL-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3399\" width=\"-375\" height=\"-562\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Green Cap = Clean<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Place jacket(s) in washing machine. <\/li><li>Add<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/en-us\/products\/Cleaning\/tech-wash\/\">\u00a0Nikwax Tech Wash<\/a>. In a top-loading machine, add three full caps (150ml) for 1-3 jackets, or five full caps (250ml) for 4-6 jackets. In a front loader, it\u2019s best to add no more than two jackets with two capfuls (100ml) of Tech Wash.\u00a0<em>Special note: If you live in an area with hard water, toss in an extra capful of Tech Wash. If you have an HE machine, use about half the recommended amount so you don\u2019t suds up the place.<\/em><\/li><li>Sit back with a good book and a glass of wine\/beer\/hot cocoa as the machine runs its course.<\/li><li>More often than not, this single cycle will be enough to have revitalized your child&#8217;s jacket.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>But my kiddo&#8217;s rain jacket still isn\u2019t waterproof!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s ok. Don\u2019t panic. Over time the water-repellent finish can wear off. When that happens, it\u2019s time to add more waterproofing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how to waterproof:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/en-us\/products\/waterproofing\/tx-direct-wash-in\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/251-Tx.Direct-300-mL-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3400\" width=\"-377\" height=\"-564\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Purple Cap = Proof<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Clean first. Always clean first. Use Tech Wash like before. Then\u2026<\/li><li>If you have\u00a0a top-loading machine, let the machine fill, then add a maximum of 3 jackets and 300ml of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikwax.com\/en-us\/products\/waterproofing\/tx-direct-wash-in\/\">TX.Direct Wash-In<\/a>. Run a heavy\/warm cycle.<\/li><li>If you have\u00a0a front-loading machine, add a maximum of 2 jackets and 200ml of TX.Direct.<\/li><li>Follow the manufacturer\u2019s instructions as to whether your garment should be line or tumble dried.
