The mighty Midwest won the crown for having the first ski area to open for the 2012-13 winter season. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wildmountain.com\">Wild Mountain<\/a>, in Taylor Falls, Minnesota, opened on Sunday, October 7<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 a mere two weeks after fun-seekers were splashing down the Wild Mountain summer water slides. Not to be outdone in the \u201cearly season enthusiasm\u201d department, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arapahoebasin.com\">Arapahoe Basin Ski Area<\/a> in central Colorado fired up a chairlift on October 17<sup>th<\/sup>, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arapahoebasin.com\/ABasin\/snow-conditions\/default.aspx\">one-percent<\/a> of the mountain open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the time of year when late season bike rides give way to dreams of knee-deep powder turns \u2013 when our hopes of waking up to the sparkling blanket of new snow are as strong as a 12-year old\u2019s excitement at the announcement of \u201cSnow day, no school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nikwax.com\/en-us\/index.php\">Nikwax<\/a> North American headquarters are in Seattle, also known as ground zero for the Pacific Northwest\u2019s epic winter conditions from last season. Across the rest of North America, though, the 2011-12 winter was bleak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we roll into crisper nights and cooler days, we\u2019re sending out good vibes for cold, deep snow to all the mountains across North America.
