Nikwax is formulated for walking, from summer hikes to winter tramps, and we are thrilled to be collaborating with outdoor community groups across the country, helping them to embrace a range of walking adventures in the great outdoors, whatever the weather.
Once such group we have partnered with is We Hike Wales, and we invited them to contribute a short, fun guest blog on the theme of adventure and community for this month’s subscriber newsletter! Please read on for a flavour of the hike we supported, and for tips on setting up your own outdoor adventure group…
Welcome to We Hike Wales! We are an outdoor and adventure community exploring the wonders of Wales. Founded in 2022 by Nia Rist, we aim to bring those wanting to get outside, explore new trails and to be a part of something, together.

We were thrilled to partner with Nikwax for a ‘stay local’ hike of the Welsh Coast Path, a 10km loop exploring the coast from Mumbles to Caswell. With a shared belief that adventure is for everyone it was only fitting we worked together!
Our route took us along some of the most beautiful coastline South Wales has to offer. We made our way along the coast path, taking in the beautiful views, blue skies and even stopping for a coffee stop or two! We finished at Verdis in Mumbles for a post-hike ice cream, it always tastes better when you’ve earned it!
We had, as usual, a lovely collection of people join us including some new faces from across the South of Wales…

“It was great to explore local as I live in Swansea but often enough, I’d travel further to go hiking. We’re so lucky to live in such a beautiful place and what a lovely morning to go and explore – a bonus with some Nikwax goodies to finish off!” Cazz
“I’ve been a part of the community for some time now and always feel so welcomed. It was great to catch up with old friends and make new ones whilst exploring the Gower coast path, even better, I received some Nikwax goodies to clean my boots at the end!” Ben
“I’ve lived close to the coast for many years and often don’t explore my local trails. This inclusive hike was a great opportunity to do that with awesome people.” Nat
If this sounds right up your street, we would love to see you at future We Hike Wales hikes! Follow us on Instagram (@wehikewales) for hike announcements and join our broadcast channel for early releases and behind-the-scenes goodies.

We Hike Wales’s top tips for setting up an outdoor community group of your own…
1. Start small and friendly!
- Begin with simple, accessible hikes
- Encourage people to bring a friend so the community grows organically
- Be authentic and open to conversation
2. Use social media
- Instagram or Facebook groups work so well for sharing photos, updates and events, as well as providing a space for your members to connect with each other
3. Build a community, don’t just run events
- Create space for people to chat before and after activities
- Encourage members to share their own favourite spots, gear tips or stories
- Celebrate milestones with the community

4. Consistency is key!
- Pick a reliable schedule e.g. the last Sunday of every month
- People are more likely to return if they know when to expect events and can plan!
5. Collaborate
- Partner with local cafés, outdoor shops or instructors for workshops, discounts or shared events
- Invite guest leaders to keep the variety and bring in fresh energy
